Halo Study is a study app for scanned textbook pages. It works with no account, and most of it never touches a network at all. This page says what leaves your phone, when, and what does not.
Scanning a page, making cards, practising them and your progress are all on your phone. No account, no connection, no copy anywhere else. If you never tap Share and never connect an account, this app sends nothing about you or your studying to anybody.
A page you photograph is read on the phone, by a text recogniser built into the app. The picture is never uploaded — not to us, not to anyone. It stays in the app's own storage and is deleted with the app.
Sharing a set sends its cards — the questions, the answers, the one sentence each was cut from, the title and subject — to our server, so that whoever you send the link to can open it. It also sends an anonymous identifier generated on your phone, which exists so that you, and only you, can list and revoke the links you made. It is not tied to your name, your phone number or your device.
The page image never goes, and neither do cards that ask you to label a diagram. A shared set expires by itself after a few weeks, and you can switch it off before then.
Connecting an account signs you in to Gossip, using the phone number or Gossip code and password you already have there. After that:
Your Gossip password is sent to Gossip to sign in and is not stored by this app. The session it returns is kept in your phone's encrypted storage.
If you download a Nepali or English voice, the app asks our server which voices exist and then downloads the file from GitHub, who will see the request as any web request. The voice then runs entirely on your phone.
This app is built for students, including school children. That is exactly why the parts that would collect something — sharing, accounts, groups — are all optional and all off until someone turns them on, and why answers to practice questions never leave the phone.
Open the app, find the set, and revoke the link: the cards are deleted from the server and the link stops working for everyone. Deleting the app removes everything on the phone. To remove sets attached to a Gossip account, or the account itself, write to the address below.
